Petoskey Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists are proud to announce the introduction of Allergy to complement our patient care services. Beginning in Spring 2014, our physicians will begin providing allergy evaluation, testing and immunotherapy treatment.
Allergy problems can be treated in a variety of way including avoidance, medications or immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual drops). Some problems related to allergy such as sinus infections and nasal obstruction can also be treated with surgery. Our physicians are uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat all of these medical problems, no matter which course of treatment is preferable to our patient. Our physicians are members of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy which specializes in ENT Allergy.
Initial evaluation begins with a consultation with any of our ENT physicians to ensure that you don’t have underlying conditions which require treatment prior to allergy evaluation. When appropriate, you would be scheduled for a two-hour skin testing session with our Allergy nurse which include extensive counselling about allergy causes, symptoms and treatment options. If you are found to have environmental allergies (allergens), you have the choice of beginning Immunotherapy (IT), more commonly called allergy shots.
Allergy immunotherapy is a technique to treat allergies by decreasing your sensitivity to the allergens which were identified by your skin test. By injecting gradually increasing doses of your allergens into your body on a regular basis, we will attempt to train your immune system to tolerate these substances which are causing you to feel miserable. With time and perseverance we can often reduce or eliminate your allergy symptoms, wean you comfortably off allergy medications, reduce the number of sinus and ear infections you suffer, and if you have asthma, keep it in better control. We get excellent results in most people who adhere to our practices; however we cannot guarantee immunotherapy’s success.
